EXPERIMENTING WITH COLOUR

A stabilised Maple Burl head with an African Blackwood handle and brass transition.

Commissioned by Arran from @finditsomewhere after seeing the ‘Envy’ mallet I made for my #sevensins series

I love making these square headed mallets as just like every single other mallet I make, each one is different, each one has a unique combination of materials, each user wants to utilise them differently...

So handle length, head size, brass dowel length and placement all have to be carefully considered to ensure you have a mallet that not only looks good, but will serve with longevity as well as actually doing the job it was designed for.

The more I work with Blackwood, the more of the stuff I want to buy!!

I finished both the head and the handle with Osmo Thin Wax and then buffed it with Alfie Shine to finish.

Big thanks (AGAIN) to Ryan at @skanwoods who recommended ‘Alfie Shine’ to me that not only smells fucking incredible, but gives an amazing silk lustre to these close grained and dense as fuck materials...this is going to be a staple in my finishing Arsenal moving forwards!!
